Canada generated 622 TWh in 2023. 80% was hydro, nuclear, wind, solar, or biomass. That national average is a Quebec-and-Ontario number wearing a maple leaf.
Hydro (357 TWh) is still more than everything else combined. Uranium (84 TWh) is almost entirely Ontario, plus Point Lepreau. Gas (99 TWh) is Alberta first, then Ontario’s swing fleet. Coal (23 TWh) in this 2023 year is Alberta’s last coal, Saskatchewan, and Nova Scotia — Alberta’s share of that column is now a historical artifact.
Capacity is a different picture than energy. Canada had 159,363.1 MW installed in 2023, including 417 MW of batteries. Wind and solar punch below their MW in the energy table because of capacity factor. Hydro punches above because reservoirs store the year. Nuclear runs as baseload until a unit is refurbished.
