Capacity is not energy. A scenario is not a forecast. An MOU is not a megawatt.

Units

Generation and interchange are published by CER in GWh. This atlas converts to TWh (÷ 1,000). Capacity stays in MW. End-use electricity is published in petajoules and converted to TWh (÷ 3.6). If a figure does not name its unit, it is a bug.

Vintages

Atlas edition v2026.2, reviewed 19 August 2026. Default historical year is still 2023 — the last common history year in CER Energy Future 2026. That is not “current operations.” Site C, LNG Canada, CHPE, Darlington SMR construction, Pickering A retirement, and the 17 August 2026 Churchill Falls agreement are overlaid from operator and government publications and labeled by status.

GHG intensity on the dossiers is 2022 NIR via CER profiles. Intertie MW ratings from NRCan May 2026, plus CHPE 1,250 MW now operating. Rates: CER 4 March 2026 snapshot. Ontario demand/adequacy: IESO 2026 APO (20 March 2026). Alberta: AESO 2024 LTO plus 2025 observed peak; 2026 LTO not yet published.

When sources conflict

They will. CER, Statistics Canada, and utility annual reports do not match. National comparison charts use CER EF2026 so every province is on the same workbook. Dossier adequacy uses IESO / AESO / Hydro-Québec / BC Hydro and is footnoted as a different series. IESO “net demand” is not CER “end-use electricity.” AESO plans in MW of Alberta Internal Load. Never average them.

Demand vs capacity

Annual TWh (energy) and peak GW (adequacy) are different questions. Nameplate MW is not effective MW. Generation minus end-use is exports, imports, losses, and interprovincial contracts — not a spare pile of megawatts. Announced plants stay outlined.

Non-emitting share

Hydro + nuclear + wind + solar + biomass, as a share of generated TWh. That is how NRCan and CER usually talk about the 80% figure. Biomass is not zero-lifecycle-carbon. Coal-to-gas conversions in Alberta mean 2023 coal energy is already a closing item.

Status rules

Every MW is operating, under construction, permitted, or announced. Announced capacity is outlined, never solid. As of August 2026: Robert-Bourassa and Site C are operating. Darlington SMR Unit 1 is under construction. Gull Island is announced.

Maps

Generation and transmission maps use MapLibre on a Carto dark basemap. Plant coordinates are public facility centroids (utility pages, Global Energy Monitor, OpenStreetMap) — good enough to find the station, not a legal survey. Transmission paths are schematic spines along the real corridor, not every circuit and not a surveyed right-of-way. CHPE is drawn as operating. Gull Island lines, North Coast Transmission Line, Labrador West, Appalaches–Maine, and Wasoqonatl are dashed until they energize.

Plant threshold

Named thermal, hydro, and nuclear plants at or above 20 MW in later editions; v1 names the system-defining stations (generally ≥ 200 MW) plus a few smaller ones that earn their row. Everything else is in the jurisdiction fuel aggregate.
